The United Nations is calling on Tunisia to release a UN official who has diplomatic immunity but was detained upon his arrival to the country earlier this week, spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters on Friday.
Moncef Kartas, part of a UN team monitoring an international arms embargo on Libya, was arrested after arriving at the Tunis airport on Tuesday, Haq said.
"We have informed authorities that his actions are covered by the conventions on privileges and immunities,” Haq said. “We have made that point clear.”
Tunisia's Interior Ministry said in a statement on its website earlier on Friday that two Tunisian nationals had been arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of espionage, but it was unclear whether the statement was referring to Kartas.
Kartas reportedly has dual German and Tunisian nationality.
The Interior Ministry statement said the arrest followed an investigation conducted since 2018 and resulted in the seizure of documents containing sensitive national security information, along with technical equipment for jamming and intercepting communications.
