Russia and other nations should recognize Juan Guaido as interim president of Venezuela, US National Security Advisor John Bolton said in a statement on Friday.

"There is still time for Russia and others to join the community of responsible nations in recognizing Guaido, the National Assembly, and the path to freedom and prosperity in Venezuela," Bolton said via Twitter.

Russia, China, Mexico, Turkey and Uruguay are among the countries that have voiced support for Nicolas Maduro as the Venezuela's legitimate president.

In separate statements on Friday, Bolton said the United States is moving quickly to deliver humanitarian aid on Venezuela's borders and expressed hope that the country’s military would allow the aid to be deliverd.

Bolton also underscored that the United States will continue to use "all tools" to cut off revenues benefiting Maduro.

Tensions in Venezuela escalated when Venezuelan opposition leader Guaido disputed last year's re-election of incumbent leader Maduro and declared himself interim president of the country on January 23. Guaido was almost immediately recognized by the United States and some of its allies.

US President Donald Trump confirmed in an interview with the CBS broadcaster that US military intervention in Venezuela was "an option."
